President Trump issued a statement in a Twitter post Monday afternoon, following his earlier meeting and joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump’s remarks at the press conference have been the major focus of the news media since it occurred, as Democrats and some Republicans have condemned it, claiming President Trump was not tough enough on Putin.

The president tweeted:

As I said today and many times before, “I have GREAT confidence in MY intelligence people.” However, I also recognize that in order to build a brighter future, we cannot exclusively focus on the past – as the world’s two largest nuclear powers, we must get along! #HELSINKI2018
