President Trump received an onslaught of backlash from both sides of the aisle, following his press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday in Finland.

However, Republican Senator Rand Paul (KY) spoke up in defense of the president, and received a tweet of thanks from Trump Tuesday morning.

“It’s gotten so ridiculous that someone has to stand up and say we should try to engage even our adversaries and open up our lines of communication,” Paul said after the controversial press conference, adding that he would be traveling to Russia early next month.

“We’re going to talk to the president about some small steps in order to try to thaw the relations between our countries,” Paul stated.

Trump tweeted Tuesday morning, thanking Paul, and quoting another of his remarks:

Thank you @RandPaul, you really get it! “The President has gone through a year and a half of totally partisan investigations – what’s he supposed think?”
