Trump Tweets: Approves Emergency Declarations for Hurricane Irma

As Hurricane Irma, already a Category 5 storm, barrels its way towards the United States at 185 mph, President Trump tweeted on Wednesday that he has approved emergency declarations for Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

The president then added in a second tweet: “Just spoke w/ Governors Rick Scott of Florida, Kenneth Mapp of the U.S. Virgin Islands & Ricardo Rosselló of Puerto Rico. WE ARE W/ YOU ALL!”

In statements on the White House website, it is clarified that “[t]he President’s action authorizes the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to coordinate all disaster relief efforts.”

During remarks at a meeting with congressional leaders in the Oval Office Wednesday morning, President Trump said the hurricane “looks like it could be something that will be not good,” adding, “Believe me, not good.”

The National Hurricane Service put out an updated advisory at 2:00 p.m. EDT, warning that an “extremely dangerous core of Category 5 Hurricane Irma is passing over the northernmost Virgin Islands.”
