At a town hall event with Sean Hannity in Austin Texas Tuesday, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump repeatedly stated that he will follow the laws regarding immigration and deportation of illegals.
Trump admitted a softening in his stance toward what to do with “good people” who have been in the country a long time, but never provided any details on that.
Hannity asked Trump, “… you seem to, in the last week, be revisiting the issue of sending everybody back who is here illegally… tell us where you stand on that.”
“We want to follow the laws, you know, we have very strong laws in this country. And you know Bush, and even Obama, sends people back. Now, we can be more aggressive on that but we want to follow the laws,” he told Hannity. “If you start going around trying to make new laws in this country it’s a process that’s brutal. We want to follow the laws of the country, and if we follow the laws we can do what we have to do.”
“We’ve got some great people in this country – they shouldn’t be here, but they’re still great people – but we’ve got some really, really bad gang members and horrible people – those people are going out day one,” Trump said.
Hannity asked, “what people who work hard, they’ve been here a long time, they own homes, what about them – do they have to go back or would you reconsider?”
Trump repeated, “We are going to follow the laws of the country. We are going to follow the laws. We are going to see who people are and see how they’ve done. Do you believe in a merit system?” He spoke of those already waiting in line to get into the country who have done everything right.
“Is there any part of the law that you might be able to change to accommodate people who contribute to society, have been law-abiding, and have kids here…?” Hannity asked.
Trump admitted there could be a softening, “because we have some great people in this country,” but he repeated again that the U.S. has some strong immigration laws that currently are not being followed, and “we ARE going to follow the laws we have.”
He also repeated his promise that he is going to build a wall, and Mexico is going to pay for it.
