President Donald Trump said Republicans need “more time” to get the right healthcare bill on the table, and implied that he’s optimistic about getting a “great” bill to pass.
“Healthcare is working along very well,” Trump told reporters. “We’re going to have a big surprise. We have a great healthcare package.”
“We’re going to have a great, great surprise,” Trump added.
During a meeting on energy at the White House on Wednesday, President Trump started the healthcare conversation by referencing a meeting he had with Senate Republicans at the White House on Tuesday to discuss health care reform efforts.
In order to pass the Senate’s version of the bill, they need the support of at least 50 senators. Disagreements within the party have made it difficult to get an acceptable bill put together, even though Republicans have a slight majority with 52 Senators. Yet Republican’s say they’re united on the pledge to repeal and replace Obamacare, and during recent elections, many of them promised their constituents they would do so.
Trump said the meeting went well and that they talked about a “great, great form of healthcare.” Trump said 50 senators attended the “impressive” meeting, and the two that didn’t attend “are on our side.”
Trump acknowledged that there are difficulties, saying, “It’s very tough, because every state is different, every senator is different.”
The president said they want to give control back to the states: “We’re sending a lot of it back over to the states if we can get it done.”
“I think we’re going to get at least very close and I think we’re going to get it over the line,” Trump said. “There was a great, great feeling in that room yesterday.”
“We’re working very hard. We have given ourselves a little bit more time to make it perfect,” President Trump said. “I think this has a chance to be great health care at a reasonable cost. People can save a lot of money, we get rid of the mandates, we get rid of so much. We have a lot of the taxes, all of the bad parts of Obamacare are gone, it’s a repeal and replace,” he said. “This will be something very special if we can get it done.”
Concluding his statement, Trump said, “Hopefully we’re going to have it soon, and we will keep you informed.”
