The White House released a statement Tuesday, announcing that President Trump will be meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc next week.
The statement reads: “President Donald J. Trump will welcome Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc of Vietnam to the White House on May 31. President Trump looks forward to discussing ways to strengthen our bilateral relationship and deepen regional cooperation with one of America’s important partners in Southeast Asia.”
Trump’s meeting with the Vietnamese prime minister is expected to include discussions on trade.
The Washington Examiner noted that the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal which President Trump pulled out of would have included Vietnam.
Trump has encouraged individual trade agreements, instead of the large, multilateral deals that would not give the U.S. as much leverage.
