Trump’s approval was not needed for MOAB strike

Gen. John Nicholson made the decision to drop the Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb used against ISIS on Thursday, according to Fox News.

President Donald Trump said that he has given authority to military leaders to make decisions.

“Everybody knows exactly what happened,” Trump said in his first remarks since the bombing in Afghanistan.  “I authorize my military.  We have the greatest military in the world and they’ve done a good job, as usual.”

Affectionately referred to by service members as the “mother of all bombs,” the 21,000-pound bomb, with a blast radius of one mile, was used strategically.  Gen. John Nicholson says using the bomb for the first time was the right use of it considering this enemy and at this point in the fight. The MOAB is meant to be used for “strategic messaging,” according to Air Force officials.

A video of the bombing shows it striking the edge of a mountain, creating a massive blast plume.  U.S. and Afghan military have been monitoring and inspecting the bomb site. Nicholson said “the weapon achieved its intended purpose.”

Trump stated he believes that the authority he’s given to the military is the reason for their recent success.

“We have given them total authority,” he said.  “Frankly, that’s why they’ve been so successful lately.”

It’s been reported that 36 ISIS fighters died in the strike.  Over the past two years, U.S. airstrikes have cut ISIS numbers by two-thirds.
