Earlier today, President Trump made the following comments concerning US involvement in the Middle East, “We’ve spent $6 trillion … in the Middle East, we’ve got nothing. We’ve got nothing. We never even kept a small, even a tiny oil well. Not one little oil well. I said, ‘Keep the oil.’”
In meetings with airline executives at the White House, the president went on to say that the $6 trillion dollars would have been better spent on massive new infrastructure projects in the US.
“We have an obsolete plane system, we have obsolete airports, we have obsolete trains, we have bad roads,” he said. “We’re gonna change all of that, folks. You’re gonna be so happy with Trump. I think you already are.”
Trump has stated for years that if the US had taken the oil from Iraq during the war to cover the compensation, that money could be diverted to US infrastructure and that ISIS would not exist today.
In Trump’s first full day in office, he made remarks to Rep. Mike Pompeo, who has since been confirmed by the Senate as Trump’s CIA director, and suggested that ISIS probably wouldn’t exist ‘if we kept the oil’ there.
Here’s an excerpt of what he said that day; “I always used to say, keep the oil. I wasn’t a fan of Iraq. I didn’t want to go into Iraq. But I will tell you, when we were in, we got out wrong. And I always said, in addition to that, keep the oil. Now, I said it for economic reasons. But if you think about it, Mike, if we kept the oil you probably wouldn’t have ISIS because that’s where they made their money in the first place. So we should have kept the oil. But okay. Maybe you’ll have another chance. But the fact is, should have kept the oil.”
