Trump’s legal team has responded after Trump’s recent tweet regarding the firing of former FBI Director James Comey sparked debate as to whether special counsel Robert Mueller was investigating the President for obstructing justice.

According to his team, Trump was referencing outside speculation.

“The president was not confirming the investigation,” a source told the Washington Examiner. “He was referencing the Washington Post story from Wednesday night based on anonymous, illegal leaks.”

The Post report angered Trump, who has continuously stated along with counsel Marc Kasowitz that he did not urge former FBI Director James Comey to abandon the Flynn probe.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein did say he possessed “skepticism” about the anonymous sources.
