TWEET: David Duke thanks the president for his comments

President Donald J. Trump faced the press at Trump Tower on Tuesday afternoon, answering multiple questions about his assessment of the events that took place in Charlottesville, Virginia over the weekend. After the president maintained that multiple groups were guilty of violence and hate, white nationalist David Duke took to Twitter and said he appreciated the president’s stance.  (See tweets below.)

Meanwhile, President Donald J. Trump said he hadn’t called out David Duke by name on Saturday because he didn’t know the former leader of the KKK was at the event. “I want the facts before I make a statement,” said President Trump.

During his press conference, the media pressed President Trump to clarify whether he denounces the white supremacists and neo-Nazis who attended the ‘Unite the Right’ event. President Trump, once again, said he does not support the hate and rhetoric of the any white supremacist group.  Yet, President Trump also maintained that hatred came from another side, which he referred to as the “Alt-Left.”

“What about the Alt-Left that came charging at the — as you say, the Alt-Right?” Trump asked. “Do they have any semblance of guilt? What about the fact they came charging with clubs in their hands, swinging clubs? Do they have any problem? I think they do.”

President Trump said that the counter-protesters went to the sanctioned event without a permit, and when there, they became extremely violent.

“Nobody wants to say that. But I’ll say it right now,” President Trump announced. “You had a group on the other side that came charging in without a permit, and they were very, very violent.”

After the press conference was complete, Duke tweeted his appreciation that President Trump had the “honesty & courage” to say so.

His tweet read: “Thank you President Trump for your honesty & courage to tell the truth about #Charlottesville & condemn the leftist terrorists in BLM/Antifa.”

The president’s remarks were met with many reactions on social media from other sources. Many calls of impeachment came from outraged users who appeared to acknowledge only the violence coming from the white hate groups, and not other hate Left-leaning groups like Antifa.

Others, posted support of the president’s stance, including Dennis Michael Lynch who did a rare Facebook LIVE broadcast. “The left and the media want to trap Trump into putting all the hate on the side of the Right, but Trump won’t bite the bait. He understands the hate is on both sides, and therefore he says what he means and means what he says,” claims DML. He also said the media will continue to play the race card, and pointed out how the Russia narrative has taken a back seat during the Virginia events.

During the press conference, the president summed up the feelings of many who were frustrated by Saturday’s events by stating, “As far as I am concerned, that was a horrible, horrible day.”
