Two teens are running for governor in Kansas

Since Kansas governor Sam Brownback has been tapped by President Trump as the United States ambassador-at-large for the Commission on International Religious Freedom, the race has begun for the next governor of Kansas, and two teenagers have now announced they are running for the spot.

The state of Kansas has no age requirement for governor, so the two teens have nothing to stop them from trying.

Jack Bergeson, 16, of Wichita, announced last month that he is running for the Democratic nomination for governor.

Now Tyler Ruzich, who will be 17 next week, has reportedly filed campaign papers with the state this week to run for the Republican nomination. Ruzich is from Prairie Village, and a junior at Shawnee Mission North High School.

The Kansas City Star reported that when Ruzich’s history teacher learned he was running for governor, he made the student give his campaign pitch to the rest of the class.

Ruzich is a member of his high school’s debate team, is an honor student, and works as a cashier at a Hy-Vee store when he’s not in class.

He has said he considers himself a moderate Republican but is still developing his specific policy positions.

“I think a lot of people would roll their eyes or raise their eyebrows at it. … But I’m here to win,” Ruzich said.

The two boys have been in contact, as Ruzich said he reached out to Bergeson, who encouraged him to run, as well. They have both agreed that this is an opportunity to encourage other young people to get involved in politics and government.

“I thought that was just so cool that someone my age was doing that. … He really started to tell me, well, why aren’t you throwing your hat in the race?” Ruzich said about Bergeson.

The teens do already have some stiff competition in the race. The current lieutenant governor of Kansas, Jeff Colyer, and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach are both running, as well.
