U.S. Abstains as U.N. Votes to Condemn Israeli Settlements

On Friday, the Obama Administration defies opposition from President-Elect Trump and Israeli lobbyists and allows the U.N. Security Council to adopt a resolution that condemns Israeli settlement construction.

The administration also pushed back against allegations from Israeli officials that it has been promoting the U.N. resolution, stated in a report by Politico.

It has been reported that Israel demanded that the President veto the measure, which is a sensitive issue largely because of Obama’s strained relations with Israel.

A statement made by an official of the Obama Administration:

“To be clear: from the start, this was an Egyptian resolution. The Egyptians authored it, circulated it, and submitted it for a vote on Wednesday evening before asking for a delay and subsequently removing their sponsorship. A group of other Security Council members, not including the United States, is now moving forward the Egyptian text.”

The official added:

“Contrary to some claims, the administration was not involved in formulating the resolution nor have we promoted it. We have not communicated to any U.N. Security Council members how the United States would vote if the resolution comes before the U.N. Security Council.”

It has also been cited that Obama was urged to veto the resolution by a number of Democratic and Republican lawmakers, which they state is ‘unfair to Israel and will undermine the long-stalled peace process between the Israelis and Palestinians even more.’

According to the New York Times, the ‘Obama administration has been highly critical of Israel’s settlement building, describing it as an impediment to a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Mr. Trump has made clear that he will take a far more sympathetic approach to Israel when his administration assumes office in a month.’

Only a day ago, Trump intervened to keep the measure in place, which marked his most direct involvement on United States foreign policy during his transition to power. Typically, such issues are left to the serving president.

Trump weighed in via Twitter on Friday afternoon:
