U.S. admiral concerned over Russian naval activities

A top U.S. and NATO naval officer recently said he is concerned that Russia has dramatically increased its naval activities around Europe in recent days.

“We’re seeing activity that we didn’t even see when it was the Soviet Union. It’s precedential activity,” Navy Admiral Michelle Howard said.

Howard leads NATO’s Allied Joint Force Command in Italy and commands U.S. naval forces in Europe and Africa. He reportedly said Russia’s deployment of the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier to the Mediterranean Sea, combined with more activity in the north Atlantic, is very concerning.

“They’re a global navy, I understand that. But the activity in this theater has substantially moved up in the last couple of years,” he said.

Russia’s recent increased naval activity comes after President Donald Trump ordered an airstrike at the Syrian base believed to be the launching point of the recent chemical attack that killed dozens of people.
