U.S. city to secure 2028 Olympic games (video)

In an unprecedented move, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has authorized its executive board to create an agreement with both Los Angeles and Paris for the simultaneous election of the host cities for the Olympic Games in 2024 and 2028. Paris will likely host the 2024 games and the 2028 games would be held in Los Angeles, California.

In June, President Trump met with the International Olympic Committee to discuss the 2024 host city election. Both Paris and Los Angeles have been making passionate arguments to host the games for months.

On July 11, the 130th IOC Session met in Lausanne, Switzerland, to discuss the proposals for the 2024 games. They decided that both cities, Paris and Los Angeles, presented “exceptional circumstances and unique opportunities.” Therefore, they authorized the simultaneous election, a tripartite agreement.

“Ensuring the stability of the Olympic Games for 11 years is something extraordinary,” IOC president Thomas Bach said.

Bach said that opening the agreement up to elect both cities was “great” for the Olympic Games and the Olympic movement for the two “wonderful cities.”

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Los Angeles city officials and IOC leaders have reached an agreement which will create a pathway for L.A. to host the 2028 Olympics. The terms of the deal are unknown, but reportedly Paris officials wanted to host the games in 2024 and Los Angeles officials were willing to be more flexible.

If an agreement can be reached, Southern California will have hosted the games three times, the first in 1932 and the second in 1984.

The United States has not hosted the Olympics since 2002’s Salt Lake City games.

The 131st IOC session will ratify the tripartite agreement and announce one city for the Olympic Games of 2024 and the other city for the Olympic Games of 2028.
