The United States will label China as one of the worst human trafficking offenders in the world on Tuesday, the Associated Press reports.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will announce the categorization as part of the presentation of the annual “Trafficking in Persons” report to Congress.
The announcement comes amidst U.S. calls for China to assist in the reining in of rogue state North Korea in their pursuit of a nuclear weapons program. It’s also comes in the aftermath of the release and death of American student Otto Warmbier, who was held captive while comatose in the isolationist state for the past year.
China will be placed in the third tier of the State Departments ranking system, reserved for nations that have failed to meet minimum standards to prevent the international issue.
