Following the Trump administration’s certification to Congress for a second time that Iran is in compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal, the administration is issuing new sanctions on 18 Iranian individuals, groups and networks over violating the spirit of the agreement with unacceptable behaviors.
An administration official listed the unacceptable behaviors by Iran as the development and proliferation of ballistic missiles, support for terrorism and militancy, complicity in atrocities committed in Syria and threats to Gulf waterways.
Seven groups and five people that assisted Iran’s military or its elite Revolutionary Guard are being targeted for sanctions by the Treasury Department.
The sanctions are also aimed at what the United States describes as a transnational criminal group based in Iran and three associates of the group.
Two groups associated with Iran’s ballistic missiles program are being targeted by the State Department.
Assets that the targets maintain in the U.S. will be frozen by the sanctions, which will also prevent Americans from conducting business with those affected.
