Chosen as this year’s commencement speaker, students and faculty at University of Alabama are demanding Sessions be dis-invited, due to his endorsement of Donald Trump.
A committee of students, faculty and staff members had selected Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) as the commencement speaker for this year’s graduation, and the backlash has already begun.
A student petition has been started, requesting that Sessions’ invitation be revoked, due to his endorsement of Donald Trump. The petition states, “It is known that Republican Presidential Candidate Donald J. Trump has said many inflammatory remarks towards women, the disabled, and immigrants. All of which are populations not to be forgotten at this University.”
The petition already has 629 signatures.
University of Alabama responded, pledging to stand by the selection committee’s decision, praising Sessions for his support for the military and service to the people of Alabama in the U.S. Senate.
Now a new faculty petition has been started, which has 140 signatures to date. The petition begins with, “As proud members of the faculty at the University of Alabama in Huntsville we believe that recipients of Honorary Degrees should reflect the best ideals of the institution,” the petition begins. “These include an acknowledgement of the benefits of a liberal education, support for public institutions, inclusion and enfranchisement of all citizens, and a worldview that respects the value of diversity in all its forms (cultural, religious, political, etc.).”
The faculty petition includes a long list of objections they have about Senator Sessions’ record, including that he supports abstinence-only sex education for teens, is against same-sex marriage, voted to increase penalties for drug offenses, voted in support of voter ID laws, and voted for an immigration bill that requires a 700-mile border fence.
One parent who signed the petition commented, “As a parent of a Graduating student, this man offends me and should NOT be a speaker. My daughter and her fellow classmates should not have to endure the pain this man will bring if you continue to allow him to speak.”
