Georgetown University and President John DeGioia’s new affirmative action plan will give preference to students who have ancestry tied to descendants of slaves owned by the Maryland Jesuits. It’s part of a new liberalized effort to atone for profiting from the sale of enslaved people 300 years ago.
DeGioia told news outlets the university will need to identify and reach out to descendants of slaves and recruit them to the university. Then on Thursday morning, a university committee called on its leaders to offer a formal apology for the university’s participation in the slave trade.
The university claims it will give slave descendants “the same consideration we give members of the Georgetown community” through their applications. Though some critics say the apologetic affirmative action initiative will isolate those who don’t have this special privilege.
