Three Americans were killed battling the Australian wildfires Thursday when their water tanker plane crashed in New South Wales.

The three crew members were believed to be the only ones aboard the plane, according to officials. There were no survivors in the crash.

The article goes on to state the following:

Officials with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau announced Thursday they were deploying a team of investigators to the crash site to collect data related to the accident. The bureau said it would release a preliminary report on the cause of the crash in 30 days.

The names of the victims have not been released.

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced, “Out of respect for the three US firefighters who lost their lives operating a Large Air Tanker, flags will fly at half mast in NSW tomorrow.”

In comments to the media, Berejiklian said:

“Today is a stark and horrible reminder of the dangerous conditions that our volunteers and our emergency services personnel across a number of agencies undertake on a daily basis. It demonstrates the dangerous work currently being undertaken and it also demonstrates the conditions that our firefighters are working under.”

Coulson Aviation officials also made a statement:
“The aircraft had departed Richmond, NSW with a load of retardant and was on a firebombing mission. The accident is reported to be extensive and we are deeply saddened to confirm there were 3 fatalities. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the three crew members onboard.”

Authorities estimate that at least 25 deaths can be attributed to the wildfires and that over 15 million acres of land have burned, ABC News reports.
