President George H.W. Bush’s respiratory condition is improving. Doctors say he is likely to be released by the end of the week.
Bush’s pulmonologist, Dr. Clint Doerr, told reporters that a weekend discharge is realistic. He stated Bush’s condition is improving though he is still coughing a fair amount and is requiring minimal oxygen.
He maintained that Bush’ spirits were high and he is “joking and laughing with the nurses and doctors.”
Doerr told reporters that Bush is “not your average 92-year-old” and neither is his wife.
Dr. Amy Mynderse praised Barbara Bush for always wanting to be at her husband’s side despite her also being hospitalized for a respiratory illness last week. “Even though she was ill, she was trying to be by his bedside the whole time. Other than sleeping in separate rooms, she’s basically been sitting at his bedside the whole time.”
The 41st president was admitted to the hospital on January 14 due to respiratory complications caused by pneumonia. Barbara was later admitted for treatment of bronchitis to the same hospital on Wednesday. She has since been released.
