Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is returning to Arizona after he was hospitalized on Wednesday, as he was undergoing treatment for the “normal side effects” of brain cancer therapy, according to his office.
McCain, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor known as a glioblastoma over the summer, spent several days at Walter Reed Medical Center (in Bethesda, Maryland) to treat the side effects of his ongoing cancer therapy. He’s returning to his home state on Sunday, and will not be in Washington to participate in the final vote on the GOP tax bill, expected to take place early this week.
On Sunday’s “Face the Nation,” McCain’s son-in-law, Ben Domenech, says the senator was “in good spirits.”
“I’m happy to say that he’s doing well,” Domenech, a conservative writer and husband of Meghan McCain, said. “The truth is that as anyone knows whose family has battled cancer or any significant disease that oftentimes there are side effects of treatment that you have. The senator has been through a round of chemo and he was hospitalized this week at Walter Reed.”
McCain’s daughter Meghan thanked her fathers supporters on Twitter for their “kind words,” and reported that her father was “doing well” and was looking forward to “spending Christmas together in Arizona.”
Thank you to everyone for their kind words. My father is doing well and we are all looking forward to spending Christmas together in Arizona. If you’re feeling charitable this Christmas @HeadfortheCure or @NBTStweets to help find a cure for brain cancer is what I recommend. ❤️

According to CBS news, it is unclear when McCain might return to Washington.
McCain’s absence is not likely to affect the passage of the tax bill. As CBS notes, “despite a razor-thin margin needed to pass the measure,” McCain would not have been a “determining factor in the vote,” considering the two critical senators who might have opposed the bill, Bob Corker of Tennessee and Marco Rubio of Florida, recently announced their support.
