The video game “Halo” has arrived. The House Armed Services Committee voted nearly unanimously this week to create a sixth branch of the military: The US Space Corps.
Congressional officials reportedly envision that a fully armed and technologically contemporaneous space corps would aid in “providing combat-ready space forces that enable the commanders of the combatant commands to fight and win wars.”
Impediments to the bill include top officials in the Air Force, who feel creating a whole new branch to guard the galaxy is more work than simply upgrading the other branches. Furthermore, they feel congress is stepping on their feet, as the Air Force Space Program has been engaged in achieving these very goals since 1982.
“This will make it more complex, add more boxes to the organizational chart, and cost more money,” Air Force Space Command Secretary Heather Wilson told reporters June 21.
The National Defense Authorization Act is now being sent to the House for a vote.
