TEXAS- A man nearly drowned last week after attempting to illegally cross the U.S. border by rappelling off a bridge in downtown El Paso, border agents said.

Surveillance cameras captured the 31-year-old Mexican national crossing the Paso Del Norte Bridge about 10 p.m. Thursday.

The article goes on to state the following:

The man appeared to be preparing to go through an inspection checkpoint, but halfway across the bridge he used a rope to rappel off of the bridge on the U.S. side of the Rio Grande.

The man then jumped into an irrigation canal that runs beside the river, with U.S. Border Patrol agents in pursuit.

Seeing the man was in distress in the water, agents used a rope to rescue him from the river.
