The FBI is assisting Northern California authorities after a car struck a group of pedestrians Tuesday night, injuring eight people.

A spokesman for the FBI’s field office in San Francisco told The Associated Press that it’s assisting the Sunnyvale Police Department but would take further action if it determined a federal crime had been committed.

Police said that the driver of the car was arrested after he appeared to intentionally strike the group of pedestrians using a crosswalk and made no attempts to avoid them. The suspect’s name will not be made public to avoid compromising the investigation, according to the AP.
