An MSNBC guest slammed Rep. Ron DeSantis (R) on Wednesday over his comment urging Florida voters not to “monkey this up” by electing Democratic gubernatorial rival Andrew Gillum, saying DeSantis should apologize or drop out.

SiriusXM Progress host Mark Thompson said during an appearance on MSNBC that DeSantis “might as well have just said the N-word” while advising that he “immediately apologize and/or drop out of the race” over the comment.

The article goes on to state the following:

“When you say monkey in reference to an African-American, he might as well have just said the N-word,” Thompson, who is African-American, told MSNBC’s Ali Velshi. “Donald Trump needs to condemn this. DeSantis needs to immediately apologize and/or drop out of the race.”

Yet again, left-wing media outlets are using an out-of-context quote to claim a Republican is using racist dog whistles.

Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) won his GOP primary for governor Tuesday night. Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, a black progressive, won the Democratic primary. Shortly after the race was called for Gillum, DeSantis was on Fox News discussing the Bernie Sanders-endorsed candidate’s surprise win.

The article goes on to state the following:

“This is a guy who, although he is much too liberal for Florida, I think he’s got huge problems with how he has governed Tallahassee,” DeSantis said, adding that Gillum is “an articulate spokesman for the far left views and he is a charismatic candidate.”

“This is a guy who, although he is much too liberal for Florida, I think he’s got huge problems with how he has governed Tallahassee,” DeSantis said, adding that Gillum is “an articulate spokesman for the far left views and he is a charismatic candidate.”

DeSantis went on to say that he watched the Democrat debates and that Gillum “performed better than the other people there.”

That’s what DeSantis said specifically of Gillum.

Where things go wrong is when DeSantis started talking about progressive policies. Gillum supports the Left’s Medicare-for-all health care solution and the Abolish ICE movement. DeSantis quickly switched from speaking positively about Gillum to the policies he supports.

“So, we have to work hard to make sure we continue Florida going in a good direction. Let’s build off the success we’ve had with Governor Scott,” DeSantis said. “The last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases and bankrupting the state.” (Emphasis added.)

He wasn’t speaking specifically about Gillum, but the policies he and Sen. Bernie Sanders support.

Republicans do need to be careful with language, as even a phrase as common as “monkey it up” can be twisted against them. He should have just said “mess this up.”

  1. WOW. The Democrats are running scared. We use the term monkeying around as no slur to anyone but to the monkeys who like to have fun. A desperate attempt by the left/Democrats. Is this all they have? Why don’t they offer something to the American people but Socialism and taking your hard earned money. They should also be a little nervous, at the endorsements by President Trump — they generally win by a margin. Not red wave, only a trickle and I believe they are seeing it — the red tsunami is coming.

  2. Is “racist” the new “wolf” cry. After a while the word doesn’t matter to people as it is the go to word of the day.

  3. My mom must be racist….she used to say to us all the time…DON’T MONKEY AROUND.
No he should not step out of the race.
    Come on you idiot democrats…

ANYONE ELSE SICK OF THIS SH*T…..I AM SICK AND TIRED OF THE RACE CARD BEING PLAYED. STOP IT!!!

  4. the only comment to MSNBC pseudo journalists is for once in your life grow up and act like an adult!!!

  5. Seriously, must democrats scream racism at every turn. Why don’t they just make a list of the words that people can and cannot say. This is all they have. Accuse the other side of what they are. For dems to see racism in everything, they must be racist.

  6. “When you say monkey in reference to an African-American, he might as well have just said the N-word,” let me pose the question, “just who is making this association” it was not DeSantis, it seems to be Mark Thompson, I think he is the one who needs to apologize and then shut up, since HE IS THE ONE MAKING THESE ASSOCIATIONS. The real fact of the matter here, this is SOP for leftists when they lose or are loosing, nothing new, when they cannot win a legitimate race they must start throwing around labels, labels are ALL they have, because there is certainly no substance.

  7. Instead of saying “monkey it up” he should have said “f*** it up”. Then the Democrats would have understood and been okay with that because they use that word all the time.
