Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, the lone Republican who has declared she will not vote in support of Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh, spoke from the Senate floor Friday night to explain her decision.

Murkowski admitted that she agreed with Republicans that Kavanaugh was a good man and a fair judge, based on his record, and said she was originally leaning to support him.

However, it was his behavior during the hearing that Murkowski declared caused her to turn against him. “Matters of temperament and demeanor are also very important,” she said.

She acknowledged that Kavanaugh is likely to be confirmed to the Supreme Court, even without her vote.
