Four people were bloodied Friday, one of which died, after a knife-wielding man, shouting “Allahu Akbar,” attacked a supermarket in Hamburg, Germany.
German police arrested the suspected attacker after witnesses in the Barmbek district market tracked the assailant and alerted authorities. Passers-by reportedly overwhelmed the stabber and slightly injured him in the process, said German authorities.
Upon entering the supermarket, the man stabbed one person, who was grievously wounded and died at the scene, then subsequently fled, injuring four others in his attempted escape. It is not yet known if the suspect has any connection to legitimate terror organizations, but recent ISIS urgings to its followers have been to use knives. Germany has been the site of multiple past Islamist terror incidents.
Officials confirmed on Twitter that “one person died” but also said the “motive and number of injured persons” wasn’t yet known. But both German newspaper BILD and a witness to the assault said the man yelled “Allahu Akbar” during the attack. The phrase, commonly shouted by jihadist militants, is Arabic for “God is great.”
Police reportedly were considering a second person to be involved in the attack, but later, the man was the lone listing in the police report documenting the incident. Germany has endured a significant amount of Islamist fueled terror attacks in the past several months, as intelligence officials have had to keep a sharp eye on middle eastern migrant populations, rooting out two terrorist plots this year.
The investigation into the attack is ongoing and German police cordoned off the supermarket for the further gathering of evidence.
