INDIA — Muslims are attacking police and local Hindus over a Facebook post about the Prophet Mohammad that began circulating online.
What started off as a protest soon escalated into violent assaults carried out by a mob of Muslims that included the destruction of property in a Hindu community. Reportedly, numerous businesses, homes, and police vehicles were torched by a mob of Muslim men.
The occurrence began after a high school student posted a ‘blasphemous’ message on Facebook about Mohammed. The student, who is a Hindu, was arrested on Sunday night.
But the arrest wasn’t enough according to the radical Muslims who spent all day Monday and Tuesday vandalizing the community where the boy lives.
Local residents are claiming police did nothing to stop the protests. According to posts on social media, “the police stood by and watched, doing nothing to help.”
The Union Home Ministry has now sent in nearly 400 paramilitary personnel to secure the area.
Locals say the situation is still far from normal and many Hindus have fled from the area out of fear they could be killed.
The Daily Mail India is reporting that a number of police were beaten by the protesters.
On of the local Hindu leaders, Tapan Ghosh said although the accused minor was already apprehended it didn’t matter, the Muslims took it as as an opportunity to attack Hindus.
