A riot broke out overnight in a predominantly immigrant suburb of Stockholm, Sweden, after police arrested a suspect on drug charges.
Officers are investigating the clashes which began late Monday when police arrested the suspect in Rinkeby and bystanders started throwing rocks at them. Unidentified rioters, including some wearing masks, torched cars and looted stores.
According to police spokesman Lars Bystrom, one officer incurred a minor injury when a rock hit his arm, and one suspect was arrested for throwing rocks. Officials are also investigating assaults on civilians who attempted to intervene and stop the looters.
Bystrom reported that one officer fired his gun because he was “in a situation that demanded he used his firearm.” He added, “No one was hit,” and offered no further details regarding the incident.
Among police investigations stemming from Monday night’s events are three cases of violent rioting, assault on a police officer, two assaults, vandalism, and aggravated thefts.
“This kind of situation doesn’t happen that often but it is always regrettable when it happens,” Bystrom said.
