New York City police are searching for the young man who was caught on surveillance video ruthlessly beating a 90-year-old man over the head with a cane.
In the video, the attacker, who appears to be between 20 and 30 years old, was walking down a Manhattan sidewalk with a skinny cane on Broadway, near West 204th Street in Inwood, just before 6 p.m. on Friday. Inexplicably, he suddenly turns and begins clobbering an old man who was pushing a shopping cart along, minding his own business.
Good Samaritans who witnessed the assault can be seen going after the suspect, but police say that he ran west on Broadway and escaped.
The victim, who lay on the sidewalk bleeding after the attack, was subsequently rushed to a local hospital and treated for cuts to his ear and head. He is reportedly in serious but stable condition.
Police are looking for any information that can lead to an arrest of the suspect, who is described as being a male approximately 5-foot-9 and about 150 pounds. At the time of the attack, he was wearing headphones, a blue baseball cap, a black shirt, a gray long-sleeved shirt, blue pants with checker-box print and black sneakers.
