SPAIN —  An acrobat plunged to his death in front of 35,000 onlookers at a musical festival on Friday evening.

Pedro Aunión Monroy, 42, was performing at Mad Cool Festival in Madrid when he fell to his death from a height of around 100ft. The Spaniard, who appeared to be wearing a harness, was performing inside a box hanging from a crane.

Festival-goers watched in horror as he dangled momentarily under the suspended stage before crashing down.  Aunión died soon after the fall (see video below).

Event organizers put out a statement following the performance apologizing for the accident and confirming the festival would continue.  Today the festival will pay “an emotional tribute” to Aunión.
