President Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin by telephone Tuesday, and discussed the situation in Syria, the White House reported.

A released statement said the two Presidents agreed on the need for safe zones for Syrians fleeing violence.  It was the first time the two had spoken since the U.S. launched the missile strike against the air base in Syria, after the gas attacks.

“President Trump and President Putin agreed that the suffering in Syria has gone on for far too long and that all parties must do all they can to end the violence. The conversation was a very good one, and included the discussion of safe, or de-escalation, zones to achieve lasting peace for humanitarian and many other reasons,” the White House said in the statement.

Trump and Putin also reportedly agreed to work together on the escalating threat posed by North Korea, and discussed how to resolve the situation through diplomacy.

The Kremlin reported that the two leaders agreed to set up a personal meeting in July in Germany, in coordination with the G20 summit in Hamburg.
