Former Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush expressed their unease about President Donald J. Trump in a new book, drawing a response from the White House.
In the book, “The Last Republicans” by Mark K. Updegrove, George H.W. Bush provided a harsh assessment of President Trump. “I don’t like him,” he says in the book. “I don’t know much about him, but I know he’s a blowhard. And I’m not too excited about him being a leader.”
His son, George W. Bush, also leveled criticism at the current president, reportedly saying: “This guy doesn’t know what it means to be president.”
In their remarks about President Trump, both men confirmed they did not vote for Donald Trump in the 2016 election, and the younger Bush feared he himself would “be the last Republican president.”
Responding to reports of the former president’s remarks, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement, “The American people voted to elect an outsider who is capable of implementing real, positive, and needed change – instead of a lifelong politician beholden to special interests.”
Sanders continued, “If they were interested in continuing decades of costly mistakes, another establishment politician more concerned with putting politics over people would have won.”
In another statement reported in a Twitter post by CNN (see below), a White House source questioned the strength of the Bush family legacy.
“If one presidential candidate can disassemble a political party, it speaks volumes about how strong a legacy its past two presidents really had the Bush legacy. And that begins with the Iraq war, one of the greatest foreign policy mistakes in American history,” the White House said, according to the tweet.
