WHY NEWT IS THE WRONG CHOICE FOR VP

Before you read this article, keep in mind I’ve been a Trump fan long before he ever announced his candidacy. For years I’ve suggested that Trump is the sort of person who can put America back on track.

That said, earlier today we published portions of an article that originally ran on Newsmax.  The article states that a Trump insider is claiming Newt Gingrich sits at the top of Trump’s shortlist for potential running mates.  I really hope the insider is lying because Newt Gingrich for VP is a bad idea.  It will cost Trump the election.

I like Newt Gingrich.  He is a very smart man.  But he offers nothing to a campaign that is in desperate need of a face lift.

Whether Trump fans like it or not,  we cannot ignore that Trump’s unfavorables are way too high with woman, minorities and millennials.  He cannot win an election without some of these people, especially the women, coming over to his side.  Newt Gingrich isn’t going to help bring these people over — if anything he pushes them away.

Now before you try to prove me wrong by pointing to all the women and youngsters who attend Trump’s rallies, keep in mind that the majority of the voters in America don’t attend rallies, they don’t watch FOX NEWS, and they never stop to read this article.

It will be months before most of America gets involved in this election and when they do, they will tune into the mainstream media channels.  ABC, NBC and CBS news programs collectively grab 30 million viewers each night.  The O’Reilly Factor, which is the highest rated show on FOX NEWS, grabs just 3 million.  And that’s really dangerous because the mainstream media will be in the Clinton corner.  A guy like Newt Gingrich only adds gasoline to the media inferno that awaits Trump.

Everyone has baggage, but Newt comes with the sort of skeletons that weigh Trump down.  For example, women voters will deem Newt as another DC insider who held a mistress while his lovely, unknowing, supportive wife sat alone at home.

The minorities and millennials will deem Newt as another old, white-haired conservative angry guy who is out-of-touch with today’s America.

If Trump picks Newt, the two will be tagged as the “old guys” who can’t be trusted because they both cheated on their wives.   Meanwhile, Hillary will be painted as the battle tested leader who survived Bill Clinton’s infidelities. Plus, they will tout how she had the good sense to select a young running mate who can help her better understand the ‘new America’  (this assumes she picks Julian Castro, a young up and coming Latino from the Obama administration).

Reportedly, Trump favors Newt as VP because he likes him as a person, and because Trump wants a VP with political experience.

Why? I don’t understand why he wants a politician.

Trump’s entire platform is based on the rise of the outsider.  Why shift message?  Trump told the AP he wants a VP who can help him weed through the legislative process and help guide through the ins and outs of DC.  OK, but Trump doesn’t need a VP for that sort of thing.

Newt would make a great advisor, and even better, a great cabinet member — perhaps a Chief of Staff or a Sec. of State — but to pick him as VP is a huge mistake.

Trump needs to pick a trustworthy personality who comes with a clean slate that is free of a DC past.  He needs a partner with a smart brain, a warm smile, and a polite whit.  He needs someone who all Americans can warm up to overnight.  Someone who is young enough to be young, but old enough to be wise.   Voters don’t want another has-been insider, almost-president type who now spends his days bouncing from one FOX NEWS show to the next.

Trump needs a ‘mini-me’ type who reflects Trump’s toughness on the big issues of immigration and trade, but at the same time he needs someone who is the complete opposite of Trump when it comes to throwing out shin-kicking sound bites.   Trump doesn’t need another Twitter warrior, he needs a master of the living room who embodies class and dignity.  He needs a person with warmth and feelings — someone who can relate to the everyday middle class American.

Trump needs a running mate who is in a healthy marriage.  A person with young kids.  An outsider — or a political new comer — with a resume’ filled with the sort of experience most working people can relate to.  Everyday people cannot relate to Newt.

Newt Gingrich will be deemed as ‘more of the same.’  He is the establishment no matter how you slice and dice it. And Trump needs to remember, the GOP nominee doesn’t need to unite the Party, he has to unite America.  Newt doesn’t help Trump accomplish such a thing.
