Woman admits to suffocating 5-year-old boy with trash bag

FLORIDA — It’s 30-years in prison for a woman who admitted to suffocating a 5-year-old boy with a trash bag back in the 1990s.

Karla Sevilla is now 35 years old.  Her victim was Michael Malcolm Jr.

Sevilla left Malcolm Jr. in a trash bin with a bag wrapped over his head.   The murder happened in West Palm.

Sevilla pleaded guilty to second-degree murder after initially facing a first-degree murder charge. “It will never give me closure,” Malcolm’s mother told reporters. “I still don’t know the reason.”

Sevilla was just 15-years-old when she said she discovered Malcolm’s body in the trash back in October 1997.  At the time, she denied having anything to do with his death.  However, science caught up to her lie. DNA testing ten years later revealed her DNA was under the victim’s fingernails.  The body was found in the trash bin located 100 feet from the Sevilla’s apartment complex.

Although Sevilla’s arrest was in 2008, her trial has been on a constant delay because she was found to be mentally incompetent.   Shockingly, she could be out of prison within 20 years.
