A woman in Tennessee used a baseball bat hidden behind her front door to beat down a would-be robber who had attempted to push his way into her house.
According to officials in the area, the woman answered a knock at her door when she saw a woman holding a sign for a lost dog. As soon as she opened the door, a masked man jumped in front of her and tried to pull her outside. When he was unsuccessful, police say he pushed her further into the house and shouted, “This is a robbery!”
The 52-year-old woman, only 4’11”, fought the man off using a baseball bat that was conveniently behind her front door. Two 18-year-old girls were also in the home at the time and came to her defense, helping her push the man outside.
During this quick encounter, the woman told police she had pulled the mask off of the man’s face only to realize it was a longtime family friend of hers, Joe Sotello. She said she also noticed he was carrying a gun in his pants.
Police said the woman’s excessive use of the baseball bat was “clearly justifiable self-defense.” The woman who had initially knocked at the door took off during the brawl but has been identified as Sotello’s girlfriend.
Sotello was arrested on charges of aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment before being sent to the Kingsport City Jail.
