For the past year, Muslim students have been using a “women only” lunchroom as a safe space at the University of Kansas.
The lunchroom is only available for one hour each day, and it is open to all women, but the main patrons are Muslims.
Abdoulie Njai, the Kansas University Student Senate Director of Diversion and Inclusion, said in an email to the College Fix, “It is mainly used by Muslim women because it allows them a place to remove [their] hijabs and eat.”
According to Njai the lunchroom has become super popular because it’s “something of a safe space for them.”
Prior to the lunchroom being what it is today, Njai claims international students who wore hijabs were being forced to leave campus because there was no safe space where they could eat due to religious restrictions that require the hijabs not to be removed in public.
