The Patty Jenkins directed film Wonder Woman has become the top domestic debut of all time for a female director. It is the first major studio film franchise to feature a female superhero as tentpole blockbuster.
The $150 milllion Warner Bros. movie, which stars Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, raked in $100.5 million from 4,165 theaters in its domestic box-office debut over the weekend, as well as $122.5 million globally. It has also garnered highly positive reviews.
Considering Hollywood’s lack to hire woman to direct major studio films, Wonder Woman is the biggest opening ever for a female director. Wonder Woman‘s performance may assert more pressure on film companies to enlist women filmmakers.
The film has also attracted some unwanted controversy. One movie theater had proposed a female-only night for its premiere, while one foreign country overseas attempted to ban the film due to its lead actress’ Israeli origin.
