Young Pakistani woman raped, now being sentenced to death as punishment

After reporting that her cousin had raped her, a 19-year-old woman has been sentenced to death in Pakistan.

The woman reported that she was sleeping in her home in Rajanpur when she was attacked and raped at gunpoint, accusing her own cousin of the crime. Rajanpur is a village in the country’s second most populated province, Punjab. The crime was reported to a tribal court, called a panchayat, which is used in rural areas and does not operate within the official justice system.

Members of the panchayat, which included the alleged rapist’s father, decided that the woman had intentionally seduced her cousin, inviting the attack. They found her guilty of adultery, proclaiming her to be a “Kari” (adulteress), according to reports. Shockingly, she was sentenced to die by stoning or, in a less brutal punishment, she could be “sold off,” according to the Hindustan Times.

Kari are often executed by family members, who call the murders “honor killings” that restore the woman’s reputation, as well as the family’s.

To really pour salt on the wound, the panchayat will take no action against the alleged rapist.

The woman and her father appealed to the real police following the panchayat’s findings. Police have now launched an official investigation, and arrest warrants have been issued for the members of the council, as well as for the alleged rapist.

The victim was removed from the village to be kept safe while the investigation continues.
