WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden informed Congress on Monday that he will end the twin national emergencies for addressing COVID-19 on May 11, as most of the world has returned closer to normalcy nearly three years after they were first declared.

The move to end the national emergency and public health emergency declarations would formally restructure the federal coronavirus response to treat the virus as an endemic threat to public health that can be managed through agencies’ normal authorities.

It comes as lawmakers have already ended elements of the emergencies that kept millions of Americans insured during the pandemic. Combined with the drawdown of most federal COVID-19 relief money, it would also shift the development of vaccines and treatments away from the direct management of the federal government.

Former President Donald Trump first declared the COVID-19 pandemic a national emergency on March 13, 2020, the report notes. Since Biden took office in January 2021, he has repeatedly extended the emergency declarations.

Now the White House said on Monday that Biden will briefly extend them both, to end on May 11.

House Republicans had already declared on Monday that they will be passing legislation to end the COVID national emergency and public health emergency.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) tweeted, “Republicans already getting results. This week we are voting to end the COVID emergency. In response, Biden announces HE IS going to end the COVID-19 emergency declarations. Now that Biden is trying to avoid embarrassment, how will democrats vote? What about vax mandates?”

Rep. Steve Scalise and tweeted earlier on Monday:

This week the House Republican Majority will pass legislation to:
→ End the COVID national emergency and public health emergency
→ Force federal bureaucrats back to work in person
→ Eliminate the authoritarian COVID vaccine mandate on health care workers

Jeryl Bier, Editor of Pluribus, tweeted in response to the report, “How in the world do you anticipate the end of an EMERGENCY three-and-a-half months in advance?! If this doesn’t highlight the nonsensical, abusive use of “emergency” in the federal gov’t lexicon, nothing will.”

  1. Now can we enter the adverse effect emergency order? That we can investigate big pharma, and determine if they knew their jab is actually poison to the human heart?

  2. He stuck his foot in it when he announced last year that the pandemic was over. Now he is trying to save face. AND….He is going to try to push through his tuition rebate by declaring it part of the ‘emergency’ funding and make it extend beyond the ‘emergency’. Just watch.

  3. Covid is everywhere today as it has been for the last 20 years. It appears to have “mutated” to its original nature without the additional gain of function help. Nearly 96% of the public (those with a choice – whatever that means) has refused the vaccine.
