Magnus, white and gay, previously served leading police departments in Richmond, California and Fargo, North Dakota before getting his current job in Tucson. While in California, Magnus made headlines for holding a Black Lives Matter sign while on the job and in uniform at a BLM demonstration, which got him in trouble with the Richmond Police Officers Association.
Magnus also slammed Trump’s immigration policies, writing in a 2017 op-ed, “The administration’s crackdown on immigrants is already having a chilling effect on police-community relations here.”
