U.S. Customs and Border Protection released their monthly border apprehensions report on Wednesday, revealing still-skyrocketing numbers of illegal aliens pouring across the border for the month of May.
According to a press release posted to the CBP.gov website, agents made a total of 180,034 apprehensions at southern border during May – up from 178,854 in April.
In comparison, only 23,237 apprehensions were made during the month of May last year.
Border agents have made a total of 929,868 apprehensions for fiscal year 2021 to date (Oct. 1, 2020 through May 31, 2020), compared to 458,088 for the entire fiscal year of 2020.
In the press release on Wednesday, the Border Patrol revealed that many illegal aliens who are turned away are not giving up and going home, but are simply returning to cross the border again into the United States:
The large number of expulsions during the pandemic has contributed to a larger-than-usual number of noncitizens making multiple border crossing attempts, and means total encounters somewhat overstate the number of unique individuals arriving at the border. Thirty-eight percent of encounters in May 2021 were individuals who had at least one prior encounter in the previous 12 months, compared to an average one-year re-encounter rate of 15 percent for Fiscal Years 2014-2019.
According to the newly-released data, the 180,034 apprehensions for May are broken out as follows:
- 44,639 – Aliens in Family units
- 155 – Accompanied minors
- 14,158 – Unaccompanied miniors
- 121,083 – Single adults
The illegal aliens came from the following countries:
- 70,630 – Mexico
- 32,001 – Honduras
- 26,374 – Guatemala
- 10,422 – El Salvador
- 40,607 – Other
The category for single adults has increased by 10,000 from the prior month. Out of the 121,083 single adults apprehended in May, they come from the following countries:
- 64,723 – Mexico
- 14,500 – Honduras
- 15,605 – Guatemala
- 5,280 – El Salvador
- 20,974 – Other
The report was released as Kamala Harris returns from a trip to Guatemala and Mexico, saying she went to learn more about the “root causes” of why people come to the United States illegally.
In May, CBP encountered more than 180,000 persons attempting entry along the SW border. This total represents a 1% increase over April.
