A Delta employee is in custody Saturday morning after allegedly causing a ruckus during one of the airline’s flights Friday night to Atlanta, where he said out loud that “he would take the plane down,” Oklahoma City Police tell Fox News.

The incident forced the pilot to divert the aircraft to Oklahoma City following its departure from Los Angeles, flight records show. The man behind the chaos – an off-duty Delta employee in his late 20s – received medical attention after being removed from the plane and the FBI is now taking over the investigation, according to Oklahoma City Police.

The article goes on to state the following:

“Thanks to the crew and passengers of Delta Flight 1730 (LAX to ATL) who assisted in detaining an unruly passenger as the flight diverted to Oklahoma City (OKC),” Delta said in a statement. “The aircraft landed without incident and the passenger was removed by law enforcement.”

A video posted to Twitter reportedly show the beginnings of disturbing incident near the front of the plane.

A report by ABC7 Chicago identified the man as 34-year-old Stephon Jamar Duncan, an off-duty Delta employee , and said he made “terroristic threats” to “take down the plane.”

According to the ABC report, one of the men who helped restrain Duncan was an off-duty pilot.

Another Twitter user shared the video, said she was on the flight, and offered additional details.

Alexandra Chastain wrote, “Hi, guys! If you happen to see on the news tomorrow morning that there was an attempted hijacking on a Delta plane flying from LA to ATL… I was on that flight and yes, it was scary as hell. 😭 Yes, he phoned the pilot and started making demands and yes he told us we would die.”

Chastain added, “He then proceeded to try to open the outer plane doors at 38,000 feet to crash our aircraft and we had to make an emergency landing in OK City. They are currently searching the plane and not letting anyone leave the airport from our flight. Thank goodness for the men that ran to the front of the plane to restrain him. If it weren’t for them, I suspect our “landing” would have happened much differently… I’m OK. Just really shaken up but my photographer is here with me.”

In the following video, the airplane’s captain is heard coming on the loudspeaker, asking for “all strong males to come to the front of the aircraft to handle a problem passenger.”

Another video posted on Twitter reported shows several male passengers restraining the belligerent man in the floor of the plane, as he struggled and screamed.

A passenger on the plane, Benjamin Curlee, posted a video once the flight had made the emergency stop in Oklahoma City, where police arrested the unruly passenger.

Curlee said the man, later described as an off-duty flight attendant, first got on the loudspeaker and told people to take their seats and prepare to put on their oxygen masks.

“I was at the back of the plane. A long 2 minutes after that first announcement the pilot made an announcement and said ‘all able-bodied men please come to the front as there is an emergency, come to the front,’” Curlee explained.

He said he got about half-way up the plane before it was then announced that they had enough people to help and everyone else should take their seats.

“From what I’ve gathered from other passengers, the man was a flight attendant for delta. Not working this flight. Wore a helmet and knee/elbow pads. Was acting weird. Wrote a note calling the man in the seat next to him a hijacker,” Curlee tweeted.

After a delay in Oklahoma City, where police arrested the unruly off-duty flight attendant, and the plane was inspected and cleaned passengers were finally allowed to re-board and resume their flight to Atlanta.

  1. While being a scary situation, no human on the planet possesses enough strength to open the door of a commercial jet at 38,000’. This is because the cabin is pressurized and all the doors, as a consequence, are being pushed against the door seals due to the difference in pressure between the pressure inside the cabin and the pressure outside the plane at elevation. To open, the door would have to be pulled inward off the seals and offset well over a 1,000lbs of force acting on the seals in order to rotate the handle to open the door. Basically something humanly impossible to do.

  2. People like that need to be locked up..People need to react
to stuff like this in order to make it stop. The fool tried to open the doors..the plane could have gone down & we need to start holding people accountable for wrong doing. People should sue for trauma & mental
anguish Maybe then it will stop. The FBI is not much better as far as criminal investigations go but I suppose the Airlines had to call them because he said he would take the plane down..Why, WHY is the big question. You don’t Love America, GET THE HELL OUT! WE DON’T WANT YOU HERE.

  3. Better yet, where is a gag one of those strong able bodied men could use to gag that squealing female and drag her to the back of the plane? How did she possibly think all that noise was going to help? I certainly hope THAT was NOT an attendant!
