Officials confirmed Sunday afternoon that the body discovered in a national forest Sunday was likely Gabby Petito.
Authorities noted in a Sunday afternoon press conference that though the body has yet to be 100% identified, the description matches that of the missing 22-year-old.
The body was discovered at Grand Teton National Park in Moosey, Wyoming, during a massive search for Petito.
Officials noted that the cause of death is unknown at this time.
The FBI has been investigating Gabby’s disappearance since she was reported missing on Sept. 11, when she did not return from a cross-country road trip with her fiancee, Brian Laundrie.
Petito’s family says she has not contacted them since Aug. 30 and vanished at some point while traveling in her white van with Laundrie.
Laundrie refused to cooperate with investigation, and has not spoken to police or the Petito family about her possible whereabouts. He has since disappeared after packing a backpack and leaving for a hike in the Carlton Reserve area on Tuesday. A manhunt for Laundrie is currently underway.
“Saddened and heartbroken to learn that Gabby has been found deceased,” the North Port Police tweeted Sunday. “Our focus from the start, along with the FBI, and national partners, has been to bring her home. We will continue to work with the FBI in the search for more answers.”
