The Florida Board of Education on Thursday approved a rule that Gov. Ron DeSantis advanced in order to ban teaching certain ideas about race and history.

The rule reads: “Instruction on the required topics must be factual and objective and may not suppress or distort significant historical events, such as the Holocaust, and may not define American history as something other than the creation of a new nation based largely on universal principles stated in the Declaration of Independence.”

The article goes on to state the following:

The rule came as part of a broader push by DeSantis and other Republicans to eliminate what they say are manifestations of critical race theory in schools. DeSantis’ office told Fox News that the rule excludes the term “critical race theory” because “CRT isn’t the only issue.”

DeSantis press secretary Christina Pushaw explained, “No child should be classified as a ‘victim’ or ‘oppressor’ based on their race or ethnicity. Race essentialism in any form is destructive, especially in a diverse society where each person should be judged only by the content of their character, not the color of their skin.”

“Florida’s education system exists to create opportunity for our children. Critical Race Theory teaches kids to hate our country and to hate each other. It is state-sanctioned racism and has no place in Florida schools,” Desantis declared in a Twitter post Thursday morning.

Reporter Zachery Lashway tweeted, “The Florida State Board of Education passed the following amendment to 6A-1.094124 Required Instruction Planning and Reporting. These are specificities of what can and cannot be taught in Florida classrooms.”

Lashway added:

Instruction on these topics have to be factual/objective & may not suppress or distort historical events. It cites critical race theory & minimization of the Holocaust as examples of theories that distort historical events & will not be taught in class.

The amendment specifically states instruction may not utilize material from the 1619 project. Instruction must include the US Constitution, Bill of Rights and subsequent amendments.

“Thank you to @GovRonDeSantis for joining us at the State Board of Education meeting this morning,” the Florida Department of Education wrote in a Twitter post.

DeSantis spoke at the beginning of the board meeting Thursday morning:
