Rescue teams in Mexico City late Monday responded to the collapse of a metro overpass, killing at least 13 and injuring 50, according to authorities.

The scene was chaotic and people posted images onto social media that appear to show the train cars inverted and resting on the road below. Authorities said cars were trapped. Dozens of rescue workers were at the scene.

The article goes on to state the following:

The Associated Press reported that the accident happened on the metro’s Line 12, the construction of which has been plagued by complaints and accusations of irregularities.

The Mexico Civil Protection Authority provided an update on Twitter just before 2 a.m. local time: “At the moment, there is a report of 49 transfers to hospitals; 20 people sadly lost their lives. Of the transfers to hospitals, 38 injured identified.”

The following surveillance video captured the moment the collapse occurred.

Videos posted to social media showed mass chaos, as rescuers scrambled to help victims amid the wreckage, with people injured both on the train and in the cars crushed beneath it.

The crowds waited in anguish after the accident. In the video below: “Marisol Tapia is looking for her 13-year-old son, who says he was traveling in the #MetroCDMX He was traveling with Rigoberto Quiroz, his father; so far, they have not given him any information on his whereabouts.”

  1. Terrible accident caused by someone not doing their job checking the train line tracks and bridge.

    Our condolences to those families who lost live ones or who’s family member was injured.
