TC Energy, the developer of the long-contested Keystone XL oil pipeline, is pulling the plug on the project, the company is poised to announce, according to a person familiar with the situation.

The decision by the Canadian company to cancel the $8 billion project comes after President Joe Biden canceled a permit for the 2,000-mile pipeline that would have delivered crude from Canada’s Alberta oil sands to refineries on the Gulf Coast.

The article goes on to state the following:

The move, part of a day-one climate change executive order, drew backlash from Republican lawmakers and even some Democrats who said the cancellation would kill thousands of construction jobs.

After Biden ordered construction halted on the day of his inauguration, TC Energy suspended work on the line, putting thousands of people out of work.

The company confirmed their decision in a press release on Wednesday, as follows:

CALGARY, Alberta, June 09, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — TC Energy Corporation (TSX, NYSE: TRP) (TC Energy or the Company) confirmed today that after a comprehensive review of its options, and in consultation with its partner, the Government of Alberta, it has terminated the Keystone XL Pipeline Project (the Project).

Construction activities to advance the Project were suspended following the revocation of its Presidential Permit on January 20, 2021. The Company will continue to coordinate with regulators, stakeholders and Indigenous groups to meet its environmental and regulatory commitments and ensure a safe termination of and exit from the Project.

Following is a statement from TC Energy’s President and Chief Executive Officer, François Poirier:

We value the strong relationships we’ve built through the development of this Project and the experience we’ve gained. We remain grateful to the many organizations that supported the Project and would have shared in its benefits, including our partners, the Government of Alberta and Natural Law Energy, our customers, pipeline building trade unions, local communities, Indigenous groups, elected officials, landowners, the Government of Canada, contractors and suppliers, industry associations and our employees.

Through the process, we developed meaningful Indigenous equity opportunities and a first-of-its-kind, industry leading plan to operate the pipeline with net-zero emissions throughout its lifecycle. We will continue to identify opportunities to apply this level of ingenuity across our business going forward, including our current evaluation of the potential to power existing U.S. assets with renewable energy.

Dallas Goldtooth, an organizer for an environmental group opposing the pipeline, cheered its demise, tweeting, “OMG! It’s official. We took on a multi-billion dollar corporation and we won!! Keystone XL is dead!! The People made this happen!”

“And specifically: It was Oceti Sakowin, Ponca, Métis, Cree, Dene organizers in solid step with scrappy & determined non-native farmers/ranchers who made this happen!! I am so damn proud and happy,” Goldtooth added.

Now he’s vowing to go after another energy company Enbridge.

“Now it’s time for @Enbridge to fall next! The legal/policy grounds upon which KXL was killed by @POTUS44 and @POTUS —- are the EXACT same for Line 3 pipeline!! We need action now!”

The Indigenous Environmental Network tweeted, “After more than 10 years — we have finally defeated an oil and gas giant! Keystone XL is DEAD! We are dancing in our hearts for this victory!”

“From the Tar Sands to the Gulf — we stood in hand-in-hand to protect the next seven generations of life, the water and our communities. This is not the end – but merely the beginning of further victories. We know this in our hearts.”
