A Los Angeles County jury awarded $1.5 million to a prosecutor as part of a retaliation lawsuit against District Attorney George Gascon, who faces similar complaints in a series of legal actions.

Shawn Randolph sued Gascon, claiming she was transferred from supervising the DA’s juvenile division, and effectively demoted, for speaking out against his policies, which have come under heavy scrutiny from his own prosecutors and elected officials. Randolph previously raised concerns that Gascon’s criminal justice reforms could be harmful or unethical.

She was eventually transferred to the parole division.

The report explains that Randolph had sued Gascon over policies he implemented to reduce charges against underage offenders, even those accused of committing violent crimes, to limit strikes against children.

LA Times reporter James Queally tweeted:

BREAKING: An L.A. jury just awarded $1.5 million to Shawn Randolph, who was suing D.A. George Gascon for retaliation claiming she was transferred for speaking out against his policies. This is a grim omen for Gascon, who faces at least a dozen similar lawsuits.

Gascón already had to settle a retaliation claim from the former head deputy of the Compton branch for $1 million, and there’s a feeling among prosecutors that many of the claims pending against Gascón are stronger than Randolph’s. This could be the first of several dominos.

Fox News reporter Bill Melugin announced in a series of Twitter posts:

BREAKING: A Los Angeles jury has just awarded prosecutor Shawn Randolph $1.5 million after she sued DA @GeorgeGascon, alleging retaliation & punitive transfer after speaking out against his policies. This verdict is the first of 17 lawsuits against Gascon alleging retaliation.

In early 2021 when I still worked at @FOXLA, L.A. County quietly settled with prosecutor Richard Doyle for a sum in the high six figures the day after I aired an investigation about Gascon’s alleged retaliation against Doyle for refusing to drop an attempted train derailment felony case against anti police protesters.

NEW: In a statement to the @latimes, Gascon’s office doubles down on their decision making:

“We are disappointed by the jury’s verdict and stand by our decision to reassign this and other attorneys to new positions within the office.”

Twitter owner Elon Musk responded, joking, “Wasn’t Gascon the bad guy in Beauty & the Beast?”
