Department of Homeland Security (DHS) whistleblower Philip Haney was found dead in Amador County, Calif., on Friday, according to local authorities.

Haney, 66, “appeared to have suffered a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound,” the Amador County Sheriff’s Office said in a release. Sheriff and coroner Martin A. Ryan shared the initial details of the case.

The article goes on to state the following:

“On February 21, 2020 at approximately 1012 hours, deputies and detectives responded to the area of Highway 124 and Highway 16 in Plymouth to the report of a male subject on the ground with a gunshot wound,” the release read.

Haney, who retired from the DHS in 2015, was outspoken critic of the Obama administration, and wrote the book, “See Something, Say Nothing: A Homeland Security Officer Exposes the Government’s Submission to Jihad.”

Haney had studied Arabic culture and language while working as a scientist in the Middle East before becoming a founding member of the Department of Homeland Security in 2002, Fox News reported.

Fox News contributor Sara Carter tweeted on Saturday, “Somebody I deeply respected and considered a friend Phil Haney – a DHS whistleblower during the Obama Admin was apparently killed yesterday in Southern California. Pray for his family and pray they find the person who murdered him. Still trying to get confirmation on details.”

National Tea Party leader Michael Johns tweeted, “Philip Haney, a DHS employee who tracked and recorded Islamic terrorism links in the U.S. and was later forced by Obama’s DHS to scrub those records, was an Obama administration whistleblower with much to say. He was shot dead yesterday in California; no suspects yet identified.”

According to a statement from the Amador County Sheriff, Haney’s death has been ruled a suicide. The report stated that Haney “appeared to have suffered a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound. A firearm was located next to Haney and his vehicle.”

Ryan Mauro of The Clarion Project tweeted, “So sad to learn of the passing of my friend & one of my mentors, DHS whistleblower Philip Haney. He was a genius & 100% dedicated patriot who personified love for others. If I wasn’t feeling great, he’d somehow sense it and call me just to remind me that I was a son to him.”

One Twitter user shared a link to a report Haney had written for The Hill: “The author of this 2016 piece, Deep State whistleblower Philip Haney, has been shot dead. ⁦@realDonaldTrump, please tell us his death will be investigated. #RIPPhilipHaney. DHS ordered me to scrub records of Muslims with terror ties.”

In the explosive op-ed, published on Feb. 5, 2016, Haney revealed that in November 2009, he was ordered by the Obama administration to “to delete or modify several hundred records of individuals tied to designated Islamist terror groups like Hamas from the important federal database.”

As the number of successful and attempted Islamic terrorist attacks on America increased, the type of information that the Obama administration ordered removed from travel and national security databases was the kind of information that, if properly assessed, could have prevented subsequent domestic Islamist attacks like the ones committed by Faisal Shahzad (May 2010), Detroit “honor killing” perpetrator Rahim A. Alfetlawi (2011); Amine El Khalifi, who plotted to blow up the U.S. Capitol (2012); Dzhokhar or Tamerlan Tsarnaev who conducted the Boston Marathon bombing (2013); Oklahoma beheading suspect Alton Nolen (2014); or Muhammed Yusuf Abdulazeez, who opened fire on two military installations in Chattanooga, Tennessee (2015).
