At least two migrants have died and 15 were in need of “immediate medial attention” after they were found “suffocating” in a train car near a small Texas town in Uvalde County Friday afternoon, authorities said.

The Uvalde Police Department said it received a 911 call just before 4 p.m. from someone who said there were “numerous undocumented immigrants ‘suffocating’ inside a train car,” adding that the U.S. Border Patrol was informed and was able to stop the train two to three miles east of Knippa, Texas.

The incident is suspected to be related to human smuggling, sources said.


Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin tweeted Friday, “BREAKING: Another potential mass casualty human smuggling incident near the southern border. At least 2 migrants are dead and 14 are critical after they were found in a train car east of the town of Knippa, TX, per Texas DPS. Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin is on scene & also tells me 2 migrants confirmed dead with at least 6 life flights having come and gone so far. @FoxNews team is en route.”

“Video from the scene earlier today, courtesy of Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin. Incident began after a third party called 911 and reported there were people inside the train car who were ‘suffocating.'”

Journalist Simone De Alba wrote, “Numerous undocumented immigrants have been injured inside of a train car. -2 migrants are dead -10 others injured. 911 recieved a phone call stating there were numerous migrants ‘suffocating’ inside of a train car near Knippa. Border Patrol stopped the train near Knippa.”

Reporter Armando Tonatiuh Torres-García tweeted, “Just spoke with Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin about the situation east of #Knippa,TX. He says 17 migrants were trapped in a container. 2 are deceased, 5 went by life flight to San Antonio and another 7 were transported via ambulance. 3 seem to be ‘okay,’ he says.”

University Health posted, “We have received two adult male patients from the train car incident near Knippa, Texas, in Uvalde County. We will provide updates here as we have more information.”

“Update from the train car incident in Uvalde County: Adult male, serious condition Adult male, critical condition.”
